Is More Skincare Really Better? A Pharmacist Explains Skin Overload

Walk through any beauty aisle and you’ll be told you need a cleanser, toner, exfoliant, serum, essence, face oil, night mask and moisturiser — sometimes all before breakfast.

As a pharmacist, I can tell you that more skincare is not always better skincare.

In fact, one of the most common problems I see is skin overload: too many products, too many active ingredients and a routine that leaves the skin feeling irritated rather than healthy.

At Grounded Skincare, I believe skincare should be simple, effective and easy to stick to.

What Is Skin Overload?

Skin overload happens when we overwhelm the skin with excessive cleansing, exfoliating and treating.

Common signs include:

  • Tight or dry-feeling skin

  • Redness or stinging

  • Flaking and irritation

  • Breakouts that seem to get worse

  • Skin that feels both oily and dehydrated

Often, the skin isn’t asking for more products — it’s asking for less stress.

Why Simpler Routines Often Work Better

A good skincare routine only needs to do three things consistently:

  • Cleanse

  • Hydrate

  • Protect

When your routine is simple, you’re more likely to do it every day, and consistency is what delivers results over time.

That’s exactly why I formulated Grounded Skincare products to work together without unnecessary layering.

A Simple Morning Routine

1. Cleanse

Use Grounded Skincare All-over Foaming Cleanser to gently remove overnight oil and refresh the skin without stripping its natural barrier.

2. Hydrate

Apply Grounded Skincare Day Starter Cream.

With Quandong, Marine Collagen and Zinc Oxide, it provides lightweight hydration and antioxidant support in one easy step.

3. Protect

Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen.

Optional: Add Coverage

If you wear makeup, add a lightweight tinted moisturiser or foundation after sunscreen. Day Starter Cream creates a smooth, non-greasy base, so there’s no need for multiple layers underneath.

A Simple Evening Routine

1. Cleanse

Use All-over Foaming Cleanser to remove sunscreen, makeup and the day’s buildup.

2. Nourish

Apply Grounded Skincare Beautification Night Cream.

Formulated with Kakadu Plum, Pomegranate, Salicylic Acid and Vitamin beads, it helps support hydration, smoother-looking skin and overnight skin renewal without the need for separate exfoliating or treatment products.

The 5-Minute Grounded Routine

Morning

  • All-over Foaming Cleanser

  • Day Starter Cream

  • SPF 50+

  • Optional tinted moisturiser or foundation

Evening

  • All-over Foaming Cleanser

  • Beautification Night Cream

That’s five minutes, four core products and a routine that’s realistic for busy women.

The Bottom Line

If your skin feels constantly irritated, congested or unpredictable despite using lots of products, the answer may not be to buy another serum.

It may be to simplify.

A routine built around gentle cleansing, lightweight hydration, daily sun protection and a nourishing night cream is often enough to achieve calmer, healthier and more radiant skin than a complicated multi-step routine.

Skincare doesn’t need to be overwhelming to be effective.

Sometimes less really is more.
